really frustrated. some people's attitude really puts me off. and its not even people i know. let's get back to the topic i've talked about before. this certain anime distributor in singapore have a complete monopoly of the anime vcd and dvd sales locally and yet they haven't been doing well.
let's do some economic analysis here. why are the sales doing so badly despite the large population of anime fans in singapore? because of free substitutes available on the net? that's ridiculous. why can music stores likes sembawang survive (glamourously) despite the even bigger population of illegal downloaders for music over the internet?
ok, so this certain company make downloaders pay fine in order to make up for their loss in revenue which, they claim, is caused by illegal downloading. to me, this feels like a teacher punishing the students for ponning lessons when the lesson she teaches are horrible to begin with. the anime distributed by this company have been strongly criticised by the people, for their lousy video quality and lousy translation etc. quoted from our friendly wikipedia: "They don’t translate from the actual Japanese dialogue, apparently. They get a Chinese translation script from Taiwan or Hong Kong, and have their people translate from that into English, introducing a large number of translation errors in the process. Kanzaki Akari says “Sugoi!” in one memorable scene in the third episode of the OVAs, which their translators transmogrified into “The wind is so strong here!”. Talk about reading too much into a line."
btw, 'sugoi' means 'awesome' or 'incredible'.
anw, so they went about fining people like some child venting his temper when his mother refuses to let him watch his cartoons.
more quotes from a blog:
"It's been reported that ______ has identified 1000 users per ISP, fining them with a sum between $3000 to $5000. Let's do some maths. 1000 X 3 X 3000, _____ would at least earn $9 million MINIMUM."
"...So is the money REALLY meant to compensate for lost earnings, cost of investigating and administration charges only? Where exactly has the money gone to? Can _____ give us a clear and TRANSPARENT idea of what cost they have incurred and where has our money been cheated of to?"
"And why is it so that _____ charges 10% interest rates on people who cannot pay upfront? Is it legal for them to do so? Charging such an interests makes them no different from the Ah Long Sans that occasionally go around my neighbourhood looking for their debtors."
