just read justin's recent entry and somehow, i'm very much affected by what he said.
i admit im at fault for having the thought that nj track guys team will not shine, when we're up against schools like rjc, hci, acjc, vjc, schools with excellent track records, with runners clocking timings far from our personal best. just 2 days ago, i was counting, along with the other 4x100m runners, how many schools can we lose to and will we ever manage a top 8. now when i think about it, that's dumb. if we always have such a mentality, we're never gonna make it.
and i sincerely apologise for that.
some captain i am huh?
i used to think that unlike soccer and basketball, victory and defeat on the track is always clear, judging from the timings the runners clock. all these while, i've felt intimidated, simply by looking at numbers which probably meant nothing at all. "you've already lost half the battle if you think you'll never beat that". you'll never know what might happen on the day of the competition itself. 4x100m especially. even singapore sports school can get disqualified during last year's nationals 4x100m 'b' division boys race. and catholic high's 'c' divison boys 4x800m team overtook sports school at the last stretch during saa schools' relay to deny them the gold medal. and acjc's 4x400m team did exactly the same thing just the day before.
what i'm trying to say is, we're no different. one thing is for sure - we're not weak. we've been slogging out guts out on the track for years, and we have the capabilties of creating an upset. we've got throwers who probably throw 100 discuses a day, we've got runners who pon lessons to train, who train despite falling sick, we've seen guys coming close to winning. we've produced speed demons like dian xiang last year and yu cheng the year before. this year ain't gonna be different. either that or it will be better.
5th-18th july. choa chu kang stadium. we've got races to win and pbs to break
just whack.
